Job Summary
Provide top-level network architecture, design, installation and
operational support for a wide variety of networking technologies,
including routing and switching, firewalls, wireless and optical
networks.
Essential Job Duties
- Design, install, troubleshoot, upgrade, maintain and
troubleshoot network devices (switches, routers, wireless access
points, etc.) on campus.
- Actively participate in the design and implementation of an
integrated infrastructure supporting the convergence of voice and
data services.
- Use network traces to analyze, correlate and diagnose
application and network problems and behavior.
- Analyze network performance through ongoing monitoring and
using troubleshooting tools. Recommend enhancements, upgrades and
changes to achieve optimum performance levels.
- Provide technical support and solutions to other IT
departments.
- Interact with campus Internet providers CENIC and Los Nettos,
including reporting and troubleshooting upstream network
issues.
- Monitor and update internal trouble ticket system on a daily
basis. May attend and participate in technical committee
meetings.
- Participate in Facilities design and construction meetings, and
provide input on the infrastructure required in main and
intermediate distribution facilities.
- Maintain awareness with new network technologies and determine
their suitability for Caltech's environment.
- Develop, write and review technical documents, including
network maps, troubleshooting guides, and operational
procedures.
- Must be able to respond to off-hours incidents, as necessary.
May require incidental U.S. travel (less than 5%).
- Mentor junior team members.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering,
Information Assurance/Networking or related field.
- 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate experience as a
network engineer, network design engineer, or equivalent.
- At least 3 years of experience in enterprise network
architecture, design, installation, upgrade and operational support
for a wide variety of networking technologies, including routing
and switching, firewalls, and wireless and optical networks; cross
platform network automation using Ansible and Python; network
routing protocols including BGP and OSPF; deploying VXLAN and EVPN;
multiple network operating systems including Cisco, Arista, Aruba,
and Ciena; development of high-level design (HLD) documents and
network diagrams; network troubleshooting and diagnostic tools; and
working with a user base with widely varying computer skills and
support needs.
- Good oral and written English communication skills including
developing, writing, and reviewing technical documents.
- Must be able to respond to off-hours incidents, as necessary.
May require incidental U.S. travel (less than 5%).
